The Waiting Game: How Long It Really Takes to Land a Traditional Book Deal

If you’re aiming for a traditional publisher, brace yourself—the timeline for getting a book deal can be maddeningly unpredictable. In this world, the concept of “average response time” barely exists. Sometimes the process drips along like molasses… until, suddenly, it doesn’t. And, on rare occasions—whispers—it can even move surprisingly fast.

So, are we talking days, months, or—God help us—years?
For this discussion, let’s focus on the time it takes after your agent submits your book to publishers—not the months or years spent writing your manuscript or finding your literary agent. If we factored those in, we’d definitely be looking at years for almost everyone.

The short answer? There’s no fixed answer.
The long answer? Welcome to publishing.

Why the Timeline Varies So Much

1. Agent Relationships Matter

Literary agents have different connections with different editors. Some editors prioritize submissions from agents they know well, possibly bumping your manuscript to the top of their pile. Others don’t care who the agent is—if they love the book, they’ll read it. Still, these relationships can impact how quickly your work gets considered.

2. Submission Strategies Differ

Some agents go “all in” and send your book to a large group of editors at once. This can lead to a faster yes (or no), but it’s risky—if your book gets widely rejected, there’s little chance for revision and resubmission.
Others prefer smaller, strategic rounds, using early feedback to refine the manuscript. This slower drip-feed can increase your odds but extend the process considerably.

3. Editor Reading Time Is Unpredictable

Just like readers, editors have books they devour in a day—and others that sit untouched for weeks. And reading submissions is only a fraction of their job; their main priority is editing books already under contract. Where your manuscript lands in their queue is anyone’s guess.

So… What’s the “Average” Response Time?

It depends. Some editors reply quickly. Others take months just to open the email. And yes, sometimes they ghost entirely. But when an editor loves your book, things can shift into high gear fast—it’s very much an all-or-nothing game.

One “Yes” Isn’t Always Enough

In many publishing houses—especially the Big Five—an editor’s enthusiasm isn’t the final say. Your book might also need approval from marketing, sales, finance, and publicity teams. So while one big “yes” is exciting, it’s not always the finish line.

How Long Can a Book Stay on Submission?

Anywhere from a week to over a year. If you’re past 18 months without a deal, your agent might recommend moving on, though exceptions exist. Post-pandemic, response times have stretched even longer.

Surviving the Wait

Being “on sub” is a uniquely stressful phase. You’ll probably refresh your inbox more than you’d like to admit. The best way to cope? Focus on what you can control—write another book, take walks, remind yourself how far you’ve come. You’ve:

  • Written (and finished!) a book

  • Landed an agent

  • Gotten your work in front of top industry professionals

That’s already an achievement most aspiring authors never reach.

And After the Deal?

Once the contract is signed, surely the book comes out soon… right? Sadly, no. On average, it’s about two years from contract to publication. Publishing moves slowly—even after the “yes.”

Why Does It Take So Long?

Because publishing. The process is layered, collaborative, and full of competing priorities. Even small independent presses can take ages to move from acquisition to release.

Can You Speed It Up?

Not really. Most of it’s out of your hands. The best thing you can do is focus on the part you do control: write the best book you can, then start the next one.
